Why does a bit of mould matter?
-
Mould is a type of fungus that grows in damp, humid environments. It appears in various colours — commonly black, green, or red — and thrives on surfaces like walls, ceilings, windows, and even furniture when there’s enough moisture and poor ventilation.
-
Not all mould is the same, but it all grows for the same reason: excess moisture.
Black mould (Stachybotrys chartarum) is often the most well-known and potentially harmful type.
Green or red moulds can also appear in homes and may belong to different fungal families, but they typically signal the same underlying issue — damp.
The colour doesn’t always indicate how dangerous it is, but all visible mould should be taken seriously, especially in living areas or places where people spend a lot of time.
-
In most homes, mould is directly linked to condensation, commonly seen in bathrooms and kitchens. This happens when warm, moist air (from things like cooking, showering, or even breathing) hits cold surfaces like windows or poorly insulated walls. That moisture settles, and over time, creates the perfect breeding ground for mould spores to grow.
Other causes can include leaks, rising damp, or poor ventilation — all of which we investigate thoroughly during a mould survey.
-
While not everyone reacts to mould the same way, prolonged exposure — especially to black mould — can lead to or worsen:
Respiratory issues like asthma or wheezing
Skin irritation
Sinus problems and persistent coughing
Eye or throat irritation
More serious reactions in people with allergies, weakened immune systems, or pre-existing conditions
Even if mould doesn’t make you feel unwell immediately, it can still damage the air quality in your home and worsen over time if left untreated.
